Having The Courage To Ask Bigger Questions With 𝐃𝐫. 𝐁𝐫𝐲𝐚𝐧 πŒπœπ„π₯𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲

Original Air Date: August 10, 2020

Imagine coming home from work only to find that your partner of 7 years has completely moved out of the home you shared together.

No warning. No note. No discernible reason.

Just the empty space where that person’s furniture, clothes, dishes, and presence once were.

Ok. Now let’s jump back one year.

Let’s say you were to study your ass off for years. You go through the rigorous and grueling process of medical rotations. You walk across the stage to receive your pharmacy doctorate – only to realize less than 1 year later that this profession isn’t for you.

We all have an origin story.

These are just two of the life events that this week’s guest, 𝐃𝐫. 𝐁𝐫𝐲𝐚𝐧 πŒπœπ„π₯𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 shared with us in this powerful episode.

This interview is personal.

It is vulnerable.

It is transparent.

It is real.

𝐃𝐫. 𝐁𝐫𝐲𝐚𝐧 lives the truth that he shares as a holistic life coach, business mentor, and speaker. The core premise of his work is to empower and teach each person he encounters to take control of their mind, body, and life by investing in themselves.

I promise you: you will not regret jumping into this episode. It’ll be a cool pool on a hot summer’s day.

We got real as we talked about mental health, social justice, neuro-linguistic programming, self-awareness, how to transition from loss, and how to move forward when your world falls out from underneath you.

Bryan and I also went deep on men and mental health. We talked about how toxic masculinity and patriarchy keep men in an unhealthy box, and how we can break free from that box.

Most importantly, Bryan made sure that he didn’t just speak in the theoretical or philosophical. He shared tools, steps, exercises, and processes you can use to address the issues that were raised in this interview.

I’m telling you, we went in on this episode.

Here’s my suggestion: hit play and brace yourself.

Moving Beyond Fear and Embracing your Experience with Nurjahan Boulden

Original Air Date: May 13, 2019

What fear have you been carrying that you are ready to set down?

What would it look like to move beyond fear and embrace your experiences?

This week’s episode provides a bold and courageous reflection on these questions.

My guest, Nurjahan Boulden, was 21 years old when she was shot with an assault rifle in an attack that killed the man next to her.

That one night changed the trajectory of her life.

Even as she moved on to become a teacher and mother of three, PTSD and complications from the bullet wound continually threatened her future.

13 years later, she is now recognized as America’s leading coach for survivors of gun violence who are ready to Feel Safe Againβ„’.

Fear has been a companion of mine during 2020. I have a feeling I am not alone in this.

Rather than numbing myself or hiding from it, I have made it a goal to confront, get to know, and investigate my fears.

A significant part of that journey is listening to the stories, wisdom and reflections from others who are on that same path.

This episode with Nurjahan is one that I listen to often when I need a reminder of the inner-power that I, and all of us, possess.

For the astute listener keeping track at home, you’ll note that this episode originally aired May 13, 2019.

As I was re-listening to it this week, I knew that the messages and insights Nurjahan shares could really serve a lot of us at this very moment.

Even if you distinctly remember listening to this episode when it first aired, I passionately urge you to give it a re-listen.

The experiences you have gained over the past 1.5 years will allow you to gain new gifts as you re-listen.

Trust me.

Do yourself this favor of hitting play.

Thank you, Nurjahan, for sharing such a vulnerable, authentic, and empowering interview.

There are many spiritual and health benefits to fasting. But sustaining from food and water aren't the only ways to fast.

On this episode, I invite you to consider joining me in fasting from these five things:

1. Comparison

2. Control

3. Social Media

5. Over-Achieving

For each of these, just picking 1 day a week or a month to fast, can have a positive impact on our lives. Consider it :).

Be Vulnerable & Make A Powerful Decision With T’keya Marquez and ShadΓ© Adu

Be Vulnerable & Make A Powerful Decision.

This was the resounding theme that arose from my roundtable conversation with T’keya Marquez and ShadΓ© Adu.

Oftentimes, when we think of β€˜branding’ we associate it with the colors, and fonts, and aesthetics consistencies of a company.

In reality, β€˜branding’ is more complex.

It is what people say about you when you’re not around.

It is a movement.

It is a feeling.

And to move people emotionally, you have to make the decision to stand for something.

My guests this week - T’keya Marquez & ShadΓ© Adu - both share their unique insights and perspective on all things branding, copywriting, and connecting with your people.

T’keya Marquez has made a career out of human connection + storytelling. She is driven by creating heart-centered copy for passionate mental health and holistic wellness professionals. As a copywriter, her goal is to uncover what makes you and your brand unique.

Driven by the desire to support women entrepreneurs and facilitate the creation of generational wealth, ShadΓ© is truly committed to offering a comprehensive range of services which is oriented towards achieving the 3 I’s; Income, Influence, and Impact.

ShadΓ© and T’keya both shared their inspiring and powerful origin stories and entrepreneurial journey.

I took so many notes as I was listening to this week’s episode.

You will walk away with tangible steps you can take towards honing in on your messaging, strengthening your brand, and standing for what truly matters to you.

Most importantly, you will walk away with a resolution to make that important decision to step into the next chapter you are being called to begin.

Honor Your Feelings With Dinah

Loneliness is at an epidemic level in this country right now.

This isn’t hyperbole. Multiple studies have confirmed that Americans feel more isolated than ever.

And this was BEFORE our lives and the way we interact with each other was uprooted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even before the masks, sheltering in place, and virtual birthday celebrations became the norm…

...we as a society were struggling to connect with each other.

Given this reality, it makes sense that my most popular episodes in 2019 & 2020 were those that were centered on mental health.

This week’s episode centers on feelings.

Honoring our feelings.

Expressing our feelings.

Regulating our feelings.

Processing our feelings.

Our guest, Dinah, has worked for over 13 years in the fields of health, social work, counseling, and education, and is the founder of a nonprofit organization targeting the issue of sex trafficking.

She has extensive training and experience in the field of restorative practices, and has worked to help schools adopt a trauma-informed approach at the student, staff and organizational level.

She currently works for a university in Los Angeles, where she creates trauma-informed curriculum and trains service providers in Los Angeles County to provide trauma-informed care to the clients/students they serve.

I’ve played back so many moments from this week’s interview in my head, over and over again.

I also had to note down a lot of the wisdom that Dinah shared with me.

For example, she emphasized that our behavior is communication.

This blew my mind.

The follow-up questions and conversations that came out of that took my understanding of mental health to a whole new level.

I’m telling you, this episode is so important.

Do yourself the favor.

Hit play.

Moving Beyond Fear and Embracing your Experience

This week’s episode, with special guest Nurjahan Boulden, is so important and powerful.  Nurjahan was 21 years old when she was shot with an assault rifle in an attack that killed the man next to her.

Nurjahan and I talked about perseverance (especially through fear), facing reality, navigating trauma, and reclaiming your voice. I was moved by Nurjahan’s honesty and openness as she shared her truth in this interview. Plus, we also talked about her love of dancing.

Nurjahan’s story has been featured in a number of publications, including Cosmopolitan and Women’s Health. In addition to paving the way to recovery for survivors around the world, she hosts online support groups and community resilience workshops, and is partnering with mental health professionals to bring gun violence prevention and recovery programs to schools and organizations across America.

The Real Talk Project and Gender Justice With Amreen Karmali

Today, I talk to educator Amreen Karmali about the power of education and founding The Real Talk Project. Amreen and I mostly discuss gender justice, allyship, intersectionality, and approaching difficulty with creativity and love. We also ponder ideas of shame and guilt and how they play into both approaching patriarchy and patriarchy itself.

Amreen Karmali has been an educator and organizer for over 15 years. She spent 10 years as a middle school science teacher and holds a Masters in Science Education from CSULA. She has also facilitated a Young Empowered Women's class and a Student Organizing class, which melded her passions for all things justice-oriented with her love for teaching.

This past year, Amreen left the traditional classroom to start The Real Talk Project, where she combines her understanding of contemporary schooling with critical lens to provide educators and community members with spaces where they can tackle ways in which patriarchy, white supremacy, and other forms of injustice manifest themselves in schools and relationships while working towards creating new ways of teaching and being together. She is also a founding member of The People’s Education Movement - Los Angeles, and is passionate about spreading health, healing, and joy to both her students and the community around her.
